How to look after or repair your own Books

  1. Clean it gently
    • Use a soft brush or dry microfiber cloth to remove dust.
    • Don’t use water or household cleaners on old paper.
  2. Dry the book if damp
    • Put it in a dry, ventilated room.
    • Stand it slightly open with airflow nearby.
    • Avoid direct heat or sunlight.
  3. Repair loose pages carefully
    • Use acid-free archival tape or book repair glue.
    • Ordinary tape yellows and damages paper over time.
  4. Fix the spine
    • If the spine is loose, apply bookbinding glue sparingly and press the book closed under weight until dry.
  5. Remove odors
    • Place the closed book in a container with baking soda nearby (not directly on the pages) for a few days.
  6. Store it properly
    • Keep upright on a shelf.
    • Avoid humidity, sunlight, and extreme temperatures.

For very valuable or fragile books, it’s best to use a professional conservator rather than DIY repairs.
