Philadelphia: Blanchard and Lea, 1859. First American edition (first published in London in 1858)

Contemporary full brown sheep. Spine ruled in gilt. With black morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Boards and spine lightly rubbed. A bit of dampstaining, mainly to preliminaries and final index leaves. A few signatures a bit proud. Closed tear to page 319-320, but with no loss of text. Some occasional mild soiling. A few short marginal tears, not affecting text. Lacking the front flyleaf. Half-title with ownership notes dates “[18]65” and dedication leaf with additional ownership inscription dated “1883.” A bookplate for the “Department of North Carolina, Medical Purveyor’s Office” on front pastedown. Overall, an excellent copy.
